While order fulfilment is the method by which a company processes a sales order to the customer's specifications, that understates its importance. Customers hold more power than ever, are more informed and have higher expectations. Efficient order fulfilment is key to a brand's reputation, the company's profits and its ability to retain clients.
FREMONT, CA: Strategic sourcing is the first phase in the order fulfilment lifecycle, which includes five main steps in total, culminating with shipping. Order fulfilment is a term used by many firms to describe activities such as inventory control, supply chain management, order processing, quality assurance, and customer service. Depending on the size of your company, most of the order fulfilment procedures can be completed in a well-organized warehouse under one roof. Many small firms employ a straightforward procedure to manage order fulfilment internally. A more intricate, multi-layered distribution centre plan is needed for large businesses. But in all scenarios, the key objective is to efficiently deliver the customer's purchase as fast, dependably, and affordably as feasible.
1. Receiving inventory: Goods may originate from a third party, another department inside the business, a company warehouse, a pipeline (for products like oil, fuel, water, or other fluids), digital data from a database, or a variety of other internal or external sources. In any case, the arriving inventory needs to be tallied, examined, and inventoried to make sure the right quantity and quality were received. Bar codes on the delivered goods are used for receiving, storing, and later retrieving items from internal storage.

2. Inventory storage: After arriving at the fulfilment centre, products are inventoried before being either distributed right away or placed in short- or long-term storage. Instead of keeping products for future sales, items should only be kept long enough to aid in the orderly distribution of commodities for current sales.
3. Order processing: An order processing management system dictates the product picking and packing activities per each newly received customer order. In the online marketplace, order management software can be integrated with the shopping cart on an e-commerce website to automatically initiate order processing.
4. Picking: According to instructions on a packing slip, a picking staff or automated warehouse robots choose products from the warehouse. The packing slip includes particular details including a list of item SKUs, product colours and sizes, the number of units, and where the item is located in the warehouse of the distribution centre.
5. Packing: A packaging team or automated fulfilment robots choose packing materials to obtain the lowest practical dimensional weight, which is determined by dividing the package's length, breadth, and height. Optimizing dimensional weight, also known as DIM weight, is crucial to accelerating transport while also potentially reducing shipping costs because delivery trucks have a limited amount of room. Additionally, packaging crews frequently include return shipping supplies and labels in case the buyer later wants to swap the item or return it for a refund.
6. Shipping: The order is forwarded to a shipping node or transportation channel to be delivered to the customer. The bigger of the two factors—the actual package weight or the dimensional weight—determines the freight chargeable charges for shippers and carriers, including freight lines, airlines, FedEx, UPS, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), and other carriers. Even if the actual weight is small, as it would be with a t-shirt, packing it in the smallest DIM is frequently worthwhile to prevent packaging from considerably increasing the weight of the entire product. Additionally, the majority of carriers follow packaging regulations to maximise their earnings from the available shipment space. If such conditions aren't met, carriers may reject the order, which could delay shipments.
With a single data set and an automated order management procedure, the order management module enables ordering, fulfilment, and returns from any location in the world. That is very beneficial for any company that fulfils orders.
